"Cocheco Folk Art Friendship Quilt"
in. x 72 in. - 2005)

"The 'DLM' (Durham - Lee - Madbury) quilters' group, to which I belong, decided to exchange "friendship blocks" and challenge ourselves to create unique friendship quilts from the blocks.  In the 19th century, friendship quilts were often given as gifts to people moving away from an area as a way for them to remember their friends at a time when communication was difficult.  The fabrics we used are reproductions of fabrics made in the Cocheco Mills in Dover, NH, during the late 19th century.  These fabrics inspired me to create a 'folk art' style quilt of my own design.  The applique, quilting, and embroidery are all done by hand."
